Evelyn, you’ve been volunteering for 25 years. What keeps you coming back to serve?
Evelyn: I grew up in a family that always took the time to do something for someone else in need. Growing up in a farming community, I learned at an early age that when someone needed help, you were supposed to do your part.
I remember as a little girl my parents including us to take a family dinner, or to help clean their home, because they were sick and needed help. It’s just what you did and that feeling of wanting to help others has stayed with me all my life.
I’ve been volunteering for 25 years in various capacities and I really enjoy doing it. It’s the personal satisfaction of knowing that I am doing good for someone else that makes it so worthwhile for me.
How has RSVP of Central Oklahoma made volunteering more rewarding for you?
Evelyn: Over the years, I have been so thankful to RSVP of Central Oklahoma and all they do for older adults to help us find volunteer opportunities we can enjoy. When I decided to expand my involvement, I remember getting a list of two hundred volunteer opportunities. I was overwhelmed. I did not know where to start.
This is where RSVP of Central Oklahoma has made volunteering such a wonderful experience for me. They have taken the time to get to know me and they know what I enjoy. I’ve always had a wonderful experience wherever they have recommended for me to go.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering but has not made up his mind?
Evelyn: Pick something you will enjoy doing and go for it, but you will need to give it time. Not just a week or two. Try it for at least 90 days and if, for some reason, it’s not a good match, try something else. You owe it to yourself to make it work.
