In 2005, Joella decided it was the right time for her to act, get involved and give back by serving as a Provide-A-Ride volunteer. For these past 11 years, Joella has served as a driver and also as an interviewer for new client requests.

Her experience has given her an up-close look at how great the need is among the elderly. She describes how important RSVP of Central Oklahoma Provide-A-Ride program is to the many low-income seniors who have come to depend on this service:

“There’s no question about it. The best thing that has happened to low-income seniors is Provide-A-Ride. As a new client interviewer (to determine if someone qualifies for our service), I get invited into their homes. I’ve sat in their living rooms and at their kitchen tables as they describe to me how much help they need to find rides to see their doctors.”

“For the elderly with heart problems, cancer, diabetes, or any chronic illness, seeing a doctor is not a choice, it’s the difference between living in good or poor health or even the difference between life and death.”

“Most of our clients are in their 70’s, live alone and cannot afford to pay for transportation. Even when family members do live close to them, it’s very difficult for family members to take off work and be available when they are needed. Our clients are always so thankful for the help we give them. I can’t think of a better way to give than to support RSVP Provide-A-Ride. I still volunteer because I see how much good this program is doing for so many elderly people in need.”
